Ngatu

W.A.L.T.. Write using aspects of an information report structure. In our class, we've been learning about 'Tonga'. In writing, our task was to make a DLO/Information Report about Ngatu/Tapa Cloth. What I enjoyed is adding the pictures. What I found hard is finding how to make Ngatu. What I could do next time is add more information.

What is Ngatu - Tapa Cloth?
Ngatu is the given name for Tapa Cloth in Tonga. It’s a cloth that made from bark. For hundreds of years, ngatu or tapa has been the most iconic symbol in Pasifika Culture. But, its most important in Tongan Tradition. It’s mainly used for special occasion, birthdays, ceremonies, weddings, and funerals. Also, they used it to swaddle a newborn baby and to wrapped a dead body.

The significance of the Ngatu to the Tongan Culture
In Tonga, it’s important to them that they keep their traditional alive. Teaching kids how to make it will pass it to generations to generations. Each piece of Ngatu has a story behind it. Ngatu aren’t only a mat, but it shows the most highest sign of respect of their culture.

How they are made?
Ngatu is made differently to other Pasifika Culture. In Tonga, ever women will work as a crew to make Ngatu. First, they’ll cut down the hiapo(which is a paper mulberry tree) and peel the skin off. Second, they’ll dip it in the water to make it soft. Third, they’ll beat it up with the stick called IKE and the long stick at the bottom is called TUTUA. To make it thinner and wider. Fourth, they’ll line up the Feta’aki(the dried pieces of the beaten bark) along the table on the top of the backing material . And they’re gonna paste the edges of the Feta’aki to the backing material. Fifth, they’ll cover the backing material with paste. Sixth, they’ll carefully lay the Feta’aki over to the top of the backing material. And pressed the two pieces together and slowly roll them up. Finally, they’ll carry the ngatu outside and roll it out in the concrete so it can dry. When its dry, they can now paint it up with some brown dye, using a feta’aki as a brush.


In my class, I made my own Ngatu using. Ink, roller, shiny cardboard, cardboard, glue, paper and scissors. I designed my Ngatu with some Tongan patterns, which I really like.


In conclusion, ngatu has been a traditional piece in Tongan's Culture. It also shows their history and the importance of their country. I hope you’ve learnt something.

Should cellphones be banned in school?

W.A.L.T... write a persuasive text. What I enjoyed is researching some facts to back up my opinion. What I found hard is writing the boy of the paragraph. Maybe next time I could make my persuasive writing more longer and add some complex sentence into it.

Should cellphones be banned?

In my opinion, I strongly believe that phones should be banned in school. In fact, we  don’t really use or need them. So, what’s the point of having them in school? When we can use them at home, when we have our free time.

Firstly, cellphones is originally against school rules. Some people usually sneak them around, when the teachers aren’t there. Also, they can actually do something that leads them into problems. Like, cyberbullying, inappropriate content and more. Teachers usually waste their time dealing with this behaviours around phones. It causes them to not have that time to teach us students.

Secondly. whenever people played with their phone, it gets other people’s attentions. It can lead others to not learn anything because of this distraction. They can use it to cheat on their test, which is not right. It can also lead into fights. Like, competing who has the best phone, who has the expensive one or the cheaper one.

Thirdly, school support us with chromebook for our learning. We don’t need our phone to use it with. In fact, other school in different countries doesn’t use technology and don’t have wifi. But, they allowed phones in their school. Some people use it to call and text each other.  And they will become more likely unsociable. Besides, what’s the phone for then?

For these reasons, I believed that phones should be banned in School. For me, its your own responsibility to chose to learn or not. Re-think if we have to ban it or not?

Serial Story

In the past few weeks, our teacher is been reading a story called 'Posted'. Every week, there's an activity for us to do and to follow up. What I enjoyed is doing all of the activities. What I found hard is finishing them in time. What I could do next time is to make an interesting layout. 
 

The 7 Sacraments

In room 6, we've been learning about the sacraments. Our task was to create a DLO to explain what does sacrament mean and the 7 sacrament including the symbols. What I enjoyed is researching the symbols. What I found hard is explain what is a sacrament. What I could do next time is make my own drawing.
